Does your potential client have an arrest record?

A female agent reported today that she talked with a suspicious caller asking about an $800,000 listing through a Zillow lead. She described the conversation as bizarre. When she suggested he talk with a lender, he hung up on her. She found an arrest record through an internet search. Details he provided were that this was his first home, he was 31 years old, lives in Pensacola FL, travels a lot for work and does consulting work. Keep in mind, these details could change during the next phone call. Bottom line – please research potential clients, never meet a new person alone, and trust your gut!

Is your potential client a sex offender?

A female agent reported this week that a potential buyer called asking about seeing property in Dublin ($450,000-$650,000, new construction, with an extra lot). When a colleague did an internet search, they found an arrest record (1998 – 2907.02 – Rape Sexual Motivation, release date 2007). However, this person does not show up on the Ohio Attorney General’s official Offender Search so that information cannot be verified. Please exercise caution when dealing with new customers! An internet search may provide details you’ll want to consider when making the decision to work with someone and/or meeting them alone at a property.

Crime Alert: Beware of suspicious caller – Dwayne Bergeman

Beware of suspicious caller – Dwayne Bergeman
A suspicious serial caller has targeted female agents at real estate brokerages nationwide over the past six months – specifically in Massachusetts, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Hawaii, Louisiana, North Carolina and Arizona most recently. The caller, who has introduced himself in a deep (creepy) voice as “Dwayne Bergeman”, has stated that he is relocating from Oregon, wants to see single family homes in the higher price ranges, but will not answer simple questions. Keep in mind that he could easily change his name, number, or other details of his approach now that this “cover” has been shared as several REALTOR® associations have issued warnings to their members. All members are encouraged to exercise extreme caution if contacted by this individual. As always we urge you to never meet individuals alone at a property, especially those you are meeting for the first time, and to follow other safety protocols established by your office.
